Since 2019 United Way the Netherlands (UWNL), www.unitedway.nl , aims to bring positive change to Dutch communities by alleviating the hardship of vulnerable population groups. We strive to help individuals and families achieve their full potential; within the three pillars of education, health and financial stability. In the Netherlands, our work has focused on integrating vulnerable refugees, connecting isolated senior citizens and achieving financial stability for adolescents.

About the role:

The Managing Director of UWNL is a versatile leader capable of delivering strategic and operational success while keeping the organization’s mission at the centre. This successful candidate will be both a visionary and pragmatic manager, with a deep commitment to the goals of UWNL and the communities it serves.

This is a part-time position, requiring between 24-32 hours per week, with some flexibility in scheduling.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Strategic leadership:
  • Develop and implement the strategic vision and long-term plans of UWNL within the greater United Way worldwide organization.
  • Identify possibilities to grow within our three pillars of health, education and income stability.
  1. Operational and Project Management:
  • Effectively manage the day-to-day activities of UWNL.
  • Structure and deliver projects on time within budget and in full.
  1. Financial Management:
  • Develop sustainable financing strategies, with a strong focus on fundraising and donations.
  • Be accountable for the financial health of the organization and ensure compliance with all legal and tax requirements.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget.
  1. Team management and development:
  • Manage, grow and empower staff and volunteers within a positive and productive team.
  • Recruit, train and enable the development of employees and volunteers.
  1. Relationship management and network:
  • Build new and maintain existing relationships with donors, sponsors, government agencies and other relevant organizations and stakeholders.
  • Represent UWNL with different stakeholders such as: corporate partners, private donors and different Dutch NGO’s.
  • Represent UWNL within the United Way Worldwide organisation.
  1. Administrative responsibilities:
  • Report to and cooperate with the Board of UWNL and the European partnership manager to ensure strategic alignment and good governance.
  • Prepare all reporting documents for quarterly Board meetings.
  1. Communication and Marketing:
  • Develop and implement communication and marketing strategies to increase the visibility of the organization.
  • Ensure a consistent and effective external communications policy, including social media, press and public relations.

Essential skills & experience:

  1. Education:
  • Master-degree required.
  • Dutch fluency and ability to work in English are mandatory.
  1. Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in a leadership role within the corporate sector or in a non-profit organization, preferably including responsibility for fundraising.
  • Experience and proven track record in developing fundraising projects and campaigns and applying for donations.
  • Experience in strategy formulation and operations management.
  • Thorough financial understanding and strong knowledge of financial management, including budget control and financial planning.
  • Excellent writing skills (project and fund-raising proposals).
  • Proven success in managing a (small) team and building lasting relationships with stakeholders.
