Community Education: The ENGINE for Sustainable Development

Red een Kind (Help A Child) and Reformed Open Community Schools (ROCS) are looking back at the successful implementation of the project “Community Education: The ENGINE of sustainable development”. The project focused on 30 community schools in Chama and Mafinga Districts (Muchinga Province) and has been funded by the European Union.

The enrolment rates for the 30 schools have increased by 43%, the pass grade in grade 7 has improved from 37% to 96%. Because of the extended lobby efforts of all stakeholders, the allocation of trained government teachers to the schools increased from 2 to 27, and 300 members of parents and community school committees as well as 163 volunteer teachers have been trained. Children’s councils have been set up to give the children a participatory voice to interact with their peers but also with their teachers. Finally, self-help groups with community members have been set up where discussions have been led on how to improve their livelihoods and lobby for additional resources. At the end of the project, 27 out of the 30 schools have managed to attract additional funding from other partners in order to help them with the construction of classrooms, teacher’s houses and toilets.

We are proud to share with you this video in which you can hear and see the testimonies of learners, teachers, Parent School Management committees (PCSC’s) and the wider community, and the impact the project had on the quality of education.

Good practices
Good practices are worth sharing. In order to learn and share the practices that project ENGINE applied that were important to achieve the results in the project, this has been made a specified component of project evaluation. In different focus group discussions a participatory ranking approach was used in the identification of the best practices of the project. These good practices from the final evaluation were validated with stakeholders during a close out meeting in Chama. You can download the publication here.
